Story behind the song
Went to a sporting goods store and saw an old man being lifted into an ambulance on a stretcher. As we were driving away, we saw an old lady slowly walking to her car holding what seemed like an old man's hat. I thought of what her life may be in the near future.
Lyrics
The old lady and the heart attack hat,
Bet she wasn't expecting that,
And her whole life flashes before her eyes.
Thinking about the time they shared,
How long will they keep him there?
And cursing time for how it flies.
She goes back to her empty bed,
Her empty car and living room,
Dumps his ash tray down the drain,
And stares at dinner that she made,
Remembering the way they met,
Oh, over sixty years ago,
She feels him in her bones, she feels him crumble,
She feels him in
She fakes the smiles and holds the tears,
Slapped in the face by her biggest fear,
She weeps and stumbles to his chair.
When sleep and smiles and hope are gone,
Along with reason to move on,
She feels his presence everywhere.
He's in the walls, the picture fram INVALID s,
In every creak with every step,
She sees him in her daughter's face,
And wraps her in her loving arms,
Remembering the way it was,
Watching her own mother lose herself.
We lose the ones we love, we feel them crumble.
We lose the ones
